When it comes to additional resources for our modules, getting good recommendations on textbooks can be difficult, hence, we have compiled a list of additional resources that are actually helpful for each year of study below. You can also access some of the mentioned resources here.
1st Year:
PHRM141 - Chemistry the Central Science
PHRM102 - An Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry
PHRM142 - Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry, McMurray / Organic Chemistry, Smith
2nd Year:
PHRM245 - Martin's Physical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
PHRM246 - Textbook of Biochemistry with Clinical Correlations
3rd Year:
The South African Medicines Formulary (latest edition available) - this is helpful to have from 3rd year onward only
PHRM301 & PHRM302
Katzung and Trevor's Pharmacology, Examination & Board Review Series (#1 recommendation, MCQs at the end of each chapter with answers)
Pharmacology, Rosenfeld & Loose (#2 recommendation)
PHRM301 Section B - Master the Mystery of Medicines, Julia Botha (not necessary to have, BUT it is a nice book and easy to understand - also cheap!)
4th Year:
The South African Medicines Formulary (latest edition available) - ESSENTIAL THIS YEAR
NB: this list is subjective, however, in our opinion these are the only resources you will actually need each year if you are interested in additional reading. You do not need to study from these resources as the notes are generally sufficient, however, should you be interested in supplementary information, these are the best textbooks relevant to the course work.
